What Cookies Are
A cookie is a small text file a website asks your browser to store. On a return visit, the browser sends it back. Cookies are what let a site remember a preference, and what let advertising networks recognize a browser across different sites.
Cookies This Site Sets
Solid Waste Guide sets no cookies of its own for tracking, analytics, or advertising.
WordPress, the software behind the site, may set a small number of strictly functional cookies — for instance when an administrator signs in to edit a page. These are not used to observe visitors and are not shared with anyone.
Cookies Set by Third Parties
Advertising. This site may carry advertising delivered by third-party networks, including Google and its partners. Those networks may set their own cookies or similar identifiers to choose which ads to show, to limit how often you see the same ad, and to measure results. Some of these cookies support interest-based advertising, which uses your browsing across multiple sites.
These cookies are set by the advertising networks, not by this site. We cannot read them, and we do not receive the data they carry. Google describes its own practice at https://policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites.
Embedded content. Pages on this site do not embed videos, maps, social feeds, or comment widgets, so none of those set cookies here.
How to Refuse or Limit Cookies
In your browser. Every major browser lets you block third-party cookies, delete existing cookies, or refuse cookies entirely, in its privacy or site settings. Blocking cookies will not break this site. Private or incognito windows discard cookies when closed.
Google's own controls. You can turn off personalized advertising from Google at https://adssettings.google.com. Ads will still appear; they will simply stop being based on your interests.
Industry opt-out tools. The Digital Advertising Alliance operates the current industry tools:
- WebChoices, for cookies and similar browser identifiers: https://optout.aboutads.info
- A single gateway to all its tools, including those for mobile advertising IDs and hashed email addresses: https://youradchoices.com/control
A note on an outdated link you may see elsewhere: the Network Advertising Initiative shut down its own cookie-based opt-out tool on September 15, 2025, and now directs users to the Digital Advertising Alliance tools above. Many privacy policies still link to the retired NAI tool. The NAI's current guidance on browser, mobile and streaming device settings is at https://thenai.org/how-to-opt-out/.
Global Privacy Control. Some browsers and extensions can send a Global Privacy Control signal that asks sites and their partners not to sell or share your information. Where it is legally recognized, it applies to this site by default, since we do not sell or share personal information in any case.
Changes
If this site adds analytics, a comment system, embedded content, or any other cookie-setting feature, this page will be updated before that feature goes live.
